Resumo: In this course we will read Nietzsche’s Genealogy of Morals and Freud’s The Ego and the Id in light of the question of a hermeneutics of suspicion. Both authors famously claim that the surface meaning of beliefs and texts is governed by unconscious structures which can be brought to light with the right kind of reading. We will look at selected passages in order to figure out how the method of reading they employ is supposed to work.
